At no. 4 they list ‘chips and curry sauce’. In Ireland a common take away is known as a ‘half-and-half’- which is half chips (or fries- we call them chips, but thats a whole other story)- and half rice- doused in the aforementioned curry sauce. Nowadays you can get 4 or 5 different toppings for your chips- of which curry sauce is one of them- back in the 1980s, when we were innocent and lacked a cosmopolitan food choice- curry was the be all and end all. Nowadays- cheese is as likely to feature- or indeed Mayonnaise.

Its another party food- this time for grownups, quite popular in the 1970s and 1980s in Ireland, but seldom seen since. I’m guessing from the name that it was introduced from France at some stage, and for a time- roughly 40 years ago- no self respecting dinner party was complete without these things. It may be in the recent memory of people who emigrated from Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s- but its no longer cherished in Ireland as it once was.

Its not rocket science- most of us have helped our mothers with the cabbage in the kitchen while still in preschool. The US version tends to feature copious amounts of melted butter- the Irish version, not.
