It’s about two death-obsessed teenage sisters whose worlds are rocked when one is bitten by a werewolf and slowly begins to transform over the following month.

Before the abomination that is Angry Birds 2 and the like came out, Stella the pink bird had her own, mostly-female squad of birds to lead in their own game. It was still very, very challenging, but I really liked the use of strong heroines. Sure, they weren’t furious all the time like the OG’s, but I loved to see them express more emotions in addition to anger.

Both can be flavored and both can have a little butter and cream added to them to enrich them and thin them out a little. I’ve never added salt to my butterscotch like I have to my caramel, but I may have to try it.

Contrary to the name, butter isn’t usually an ingredient in butterscotch. It’s made about the same way as caramel but the flavor is different. It’s like comparing maple syrup to molasses. They’re both syrups but the comparison ends there. Butterscotch has the molasses flavor added to it that gives it depth. Not everyone likes butterscotch and I’ll bet those people aren’t big fans of molasses either. My mom loved to add a bit of dark rum into her butterscotch sauce at Christmas. I have to tell you, the combination is hella good!  

Buy here:    I love it when people think they are going to punish me by not talking to me shirt What we’ve discovered recently is that adding a bit of salt to caramel activates two parts of our taste buds and makes that sweet and salty connection really amazing! Just like sweet and sour, the combination of more than one taste bud makes for a delicious explosion. Chefs have been doing this for years. I’ve added salt into my apple pies because I add ingredients that end up making a caramel sauce as the pie bakes. The addition of the salt really amps up the flavors and gives the pie an added note of flavor. Some people will add butter to caramel, but it’s not necessary.

She made a lot of candy from scratch when I was growing up so I’ve always considered a candy thermometer a “must have” in my kitchen. Caramel was made with white sugar only then scalded cream was added after the caramel was cooled a bit. At that point she decided if it was going to be used as candy, sauce or a coating.

As for the ‘modern’ dishes- it looks like someone who came up with them was time warped from the 1980s- they’re mostly oldfashioned and quaint these days.

In Ireland the recipe varies from place to place- but more often than not, is made with raw rather than pre-cooked potato. If you are offered a potato cake in 5 different places in Ireland- you’ll get 5 entirely different offerings- the only thing they have in common is they feature potato.

In Ireland a common take away is known as a ‘half-and-half’- which is half chips (or fries- we call them chips, but thats a whole other story)- and half rice- doused in the aforementioned curry sauce. Nowadays you can get 4 or 5 different toppings for your chips- of which curry sauce is one of them- back in the 1980s, when we were innocent and lacked a cosmopolitan food choice- curry was the be all and end all. Nowadays- cheese is as likely to feature- or indeed Mayonnaise.

We have both shepherds pie and cottage pie here. Shepherds pie uses mutton- cottage pie uses beef. In either case- adding Guinness to it is a modern twist rather than a historic ingredient- which will have featured the ubiquitous carrot and onion.

Honestly- the largest selling soup in Ireland is cream of chicken soup- and in tinned soups, it doesn’t feature. Its a bit of a marmite soup- you either love it or hate it- and in today’s health conscious world, potato based soups are verbotten, as the GI index of them is appalling.

This is a strange little vegetable, known stateside as ‘rutabaga’- was used to give a little bit of flavour to dishes which might otherwise have been a little too bland for anyone’s liking. Turnips also played a large role in Halloween celebrations in Ireland- where the aforementioned root vegetable was hollowed out and turned into a lantern to keep evil spirits away. The Irish brought this Halloween tradition to the US- but of course in 1840s New York- good luck finding a ready supply of Rutabaga. The one cheap vegetable (or fruit, depending on your sensibilities) that was readily available- was the pumpkin. So- the turnip was was replaced by the pumpkin- a vegetable that wasn’t native to Ireland, and the rest is history as they say.

Its another party food- this time for grownups, quite popular in the 1970s and 1980s in Ireland, but seldom seen since. I’m guessing from the name that it was introduced from France at some stage, and for a time- roughly 40 years ago- no self respecting dinner party was complete without these things. It may be in the recent memory of people who emigrated from Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s- but its no longer cherished in Ireland as it once was.

They differ remarkably from their American facsimile as Irish (and English) sausage rolls are made with pork, never ever beef- and are flavoured with herbs and spices to suit the local tastes (no two sausage rolls ever tasting the same). American sausage rolls are bland and boring in comparison- and also strangely- the meat normally looks a much darker colour than the light pink of an Irish sausage roll.

The custard eaten in Ireland, since before 1840, was an English invention- Birds Custard, which was famous for not containing any eggs. The story goes that it was invented to allow people who couldn’t tolerate eggs eat custard- but it took off because it was so cheap (basically its main ingredient was corn flour).

But St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland was a religious festival imploring the great saint of our island to bestow his grace upon the poor downthrodden Irish- and not a pagent like it is today. The whole Irish parade- complete with céilí dancing, music and much more besides- is an American invention- with the first St. Patrick’s Day parade recorded in Boston- not in Ireland at all.

Now the Jewish butcher shops would not have stocked bacon (or any pork products)- so the Irish, instead of going further afield, would have tried to buy a local meat with which to recreate their beloved bacon and cabbage- and that meat very often was corned beef. As meat was a treat- it was devoured with relish- and a whole new myth about corned beef and cabbage grew up.

Very often these two communities lived side by side, out of necessity, as both were at the bottom of the social ladder (at the time). So while they worked in different professions (a sizable number of Irish would have been dockers for example- whereas a lot of jewish would have drifted into various food businesses, including butchering (to ensure the provision of Kosher supplies)).
