At no. 7 - turnips. This is a strange little vegetable, known stateside as ‘rutabaga’- was used to give a little bit of flavour to dishes which might otherwise have been a little too bland for anyone’s liking. Turnips also played a large role in Halloween celebrations in Ireland- where the aforementioned root vegetable was hollowed out and turned into a lantern to keep evil spirits away. The Irish brought this Halloween tradition to the US- but of course in 1840s New York- good luck finding a ready supply of Rutabaga. The one cheap vegetable (or fruit, depending on your sensibilities) that was readily available- was the pumpkin. So- the turnip was was replaced by the pumpkin- a vegetable that wasn’t native to Ireland, and the rest is history as they say.
