Most people these days do still make stews- featuring minced beef rather than cubes of stewing beef (which are actually quite difficult to find). Often the sad modern version is assisted with packets of stew sauce from a can/bottle/packet- rather than gently cooked on a low heat for hours on end, the old fashioned way.

Its another party food- this time for grownups, quite popular in the 1970s and 1980s in Ireland, but seldom seen since. I’m guessing from the name that it was introduced from France at some stage, and for a time- roughly 40 years ago- no self respecting dinner party was complete without these things. It may be in the recent memory of people who emigrated from Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s- but its no longer cherished in Ireland as it once was.

Its not rocket science- most of us have helped our mothers with the cabbage in the kitchen while still in preschool. The US version tends to feature copious amounts of melted butter- the Irish version, not.
